X12 886 — Customer Call Reporting
The 886 reports sales force or merchandising visits — date, visited store, duration, completed actions — from a supplier to its retailer or principal.
Purpose
The 886 documents a visit: who came (rep), when, which store, duration, completed actions (planogram reset, end-cap built, out-of-stock checked, promo activated). It serves trade marketing reporting and activity control.
It is used by CPG companies to track their field force and by retailers to bill services. Acknowledged by 997.
Envelope structure
The 886 travels within the three X12 envelope levels (ISA/IEA,
GS/GE with functional group CR, and ST/SE).

Common pitfalls
- Geofencing proof: a 886 without GPS / geofence stamp can be contested in case of rep fraud; embed a location REF.
- Mass falsification risk: without signature, a rep can generate fictitious 886; pair with planogram photos or SKU scans.
- Cross-reference promo: an end-cap built must reference the 877 promo number, otherwise trade marketing linkage breaks.
