X12 887 — Coupon Notification

The 887 notifies the issuance or circulation of a coupon — distribution channel, vehicle, audience — from a manufacturer or clearinghouse to downstream actors.

Purpose

The 887 documents the operational issuance of a coupon: channel (FSI free standing insert, in-store, digital, direct mail), vehicle (Sunday newspaper, supermarket flyer, retailer app), audience size, distribution date. It follows a 877 (promotion announcement) with distribution details.

It feeds redemption rate forecasting and coupon budget forecasting. Acknowledged by 997.

Envelope structure

The 887 travels within the three X12 envelope levels (ISA/IEA, GS/GE with functional group CO, and ST/SE). Didactic example in release 004010:

Common segments

  • HeaderST, BNR (Beginning Segment for Notification).
  • ManufacturerN1*MF.
  • Coupon referenceREF*ZZ (CPN number).
  • Channel / vehicle — repeated REF*ZZ.
  • Date / distributionDTM*090 (drop date), QTY*36 (Audience size).
  • SummarySE.

Common pitfalls

  • Channel cannibalization: a coupon distributed simultaneously FSI + digital on the same audience doubles redemptions without incremental gain — a 887 must split audiences.
  • Digital fingerprinting: a digital coupon has a unique fingerprint per redemption; a digital 887 must carry it in REF, otherwise fraud multiplies.
  • Drop date vs effective: the drop date (distribution) is not the effective date (validity start); a 887 must clarify both.

Documentation

The code 887 and the name Coupon Notification are public and listed on x12.org/products/transaction-sets. The complete structure of loops, qualifiers and code lists is distributed by DISA via the proprietary Implementation Guides (TR3). ediverse.io covers only public concepts, the envelope and didactic examples.
