X12 225 — Response to a Cargo Insurance Advice of Shipment
The 225 acknowledges or adjusts a cargo insurance advice issued by a shipper, from the marine cargo insurer or broker.
Purpose
The 225 documents the marine insurer reply to a shipment advice: coverage confirmation, premium adjustment, partial refusal, additional information request. It feeds the marine cargo policy declaration cycle.
It is used in international maritime trade alongside corporate open-cover policies. Acknowledged by 997.
Envelope structure
The 225 travels within the three X12 envelope levels (ISA/IEA,
GS/GE with functional group IS, and ST/SE).

Common pitfalls
- Open cover vs facultative: under open cover, the 225 confirms a declaration; under facultative, it amounts to negotiation. Mixing both breaks the premium.
- Currency: marine premium is often USD; sending a 225 without an explicit currency exposes to wrong conversion on valued policies.
- War & strikes clauses: these are an additional tariff endorsement — a 225 silent on the extension is read as standard coverage without WSRCC.
