X12 144 — Student Loan Transfer Add-On Record
Transfer of a student loan between two lenders or servicers: payment history, remaining balance, terms, student info.
Purpose
The 144 standardises the transfer of an existing student loan between financial actors: secondary market sale (Sallie Mae → Navient → Nelnet), refinancing, consolidation. Includes all history needed for the new servicer to take over the account without disruption to the borrower.
Envelope structure
The 144 travels inside the three X12 envelope levels (ISA/IEA,
GS/GE with functional group AL, and ST/SE).

Common pitfalls
- Missing payment history: the new servicer cannot honour a payment-on-time history if the previous one does not transfer it.
- Forgotten borrower notice: TILA requires written notice to the borrower within 15 days.
- Transfer date without clean cutover: if day J-1 at old, J at new — avoid double-debit or interest break.
