XML status: mature standard, slight decline in favour of JSON for APIs, persistent in EDI, document publishing, governance, healthcare (HL7, etc.).

W3C founded October 1994 by Tim Berners-Lee at MIT ; XML Working Group created 1996 ; XML 1.0 published 10 February 1998 ; W3C XML Activity continues with specific sub-groups.
Example in context
OASIS UBL 2.4 standard uses XML 1.0 schema 1.1, XSD, XPath 2.0 in its ~85 document types ; PEPPOL e-invoicing relies entirely on this W3C XML stack.
