W3C XML Activity key publications: XML 1.0 (1998, 5th Edition 2008), XML 1.1 (2006, mainly Unicode update), XML Schema (XSD) 1.0 (2001), XML Schema 1.1 (2012), XPath 1.0 (1999), XPath 2.0 / 3.0 (2014), XSLT 1.0/2.0/3.0, XQuery 1.0 (2007), Namespaces in XML (1999), XML Inclusions (XInclude), XLink, XPointer, XML Signature (2002), XML Encryption (2002), XML Catalogs (OASIS). XML status: mature standard, slight decline in favour of JSON for APIs, persistent in EDI, document publishing, governance, healthcare (HL7, etc.).

Origin

W3C founded October 1994 by Tim Berners-Lee at MIT ; XML Working Group created 1996 ; XML 1.0 published 10 February 1998 ; W3C XML Activity continues with specific sub-groups.

Example in context

OASIS UBL 2.4 standard uses XML 1.0 schema 1.1, XSD, XPath 2.0 in its ~85 document types ; PEPPOL e-invoicing relies entirely on this W3C XML stack.
