XMP metadata (Factur-X)
XMP is the PDF metadata block that announces and qualifies the embedded Factur-X file.
Definition
XMP metadata (Extensible Metadata Platform) is a block of descriptive information stored inside a PDF. In the case of Factur-X, this block explicitly declares the embedded XML file: its name, its version and its profile (MINIMUM, BASIC WL, BASIC, EN 16931 or EXTENDED).
What it is for
- Let software automatically detect that a PDF is a Factur-X invoice rather than an ordinary PDF.
- Indicate which profile to apply in order to read and validate the XML correctly.
- Ensure interoperable reading between issuers and receivers using different tools.
Good to know
If the XMP block is missing or inconsistent with the actually embedded file, some software may not recognize the invoice as a valid Factur-X. Consistency between the XMP, the attached file name and the declared profile is therefore essential.
