X12-VERSION-FORMAT
X12 version/format is the X12 versioning system on 6 digits: VVVRRR (version, release, sub-release). 004010, 005010, 008020 are the major historical versions.
Definition
The 6-digit code appears in ISA12 (Interchange Control Version Number) and GS08 (Functional Group Version). Major versions are published roughly every 5 years: 002001 (1983), 003040 (1992), 004010 (1996), 005010 (2008), 006020 (2014), 008020 (2020).
Origin
System in place since 1983. 4010 remains dominant outside HIPAA and major retailers. HIPAA is frozen on 005010 since 2012.
Use
On a standard non-HIPAA 850 dispatch: ISA*00**00**ZZ*ACME*ZZ*GLOBEX*260514*0900*U*00401*000000001*0*P*>. The 00401 (version=00401 → 4010) forces the mapping tool to load the 4010 spec.
