Definition
TRN01 (Trace Type Code) is typically 1 (Current Transaction Trace Numbers). TRN02 carries the Reference Identification, i.e. the trace number the bank returns in the ACH record; it lets the payee reconcile the received payment with the 820 advice when the two travel through separate channels.
Origin
Defined in the ASC X12 Segment Directory (ANSI ASC X12.6 standard), used notably in transactions 820 and 856, maintained by the Accredited Standards Committee X12.
