N1 loop

ASC X12 structure for party identification and address.

Definition

The N1 loop begins with the N1 (Name) segment, which carries an entity identifier code (N101, e.g. BY = Buyer, SE = Selling party, ST = Ship To) and, optionally, a qualified identifier (N103/N104). It may contain N2 (additional name), N3 (street) and N4 (city/state/postal code/country). It appears in most transactions (850, 810, 856…).

Origin

Defined in the ASC X12 EDI Standard (segment dictionary, N1 segment), published and maintained by the Accredited Standards Committee X12 (ANSI ASC X12).

Example in context

N1*BY*ACME RETAIL*92*0012345~ — the BY (Buyer) entity "ACME RETAIL", identified by an assigned code (qualifier 92).

  • N1 — the header segment of the loop.
  • N3 — the street information in the loop.
