UNECE-REC-9
UNECE Rec 9 is the UN/CEFACT Recommendation 9 (1978) prescribing the use of the 3-letter ISO 4217 code to identify currencies in international trade.
Definition
Rec 9 standardises the use of the alphabetic ISO 4217 code (USD, EUR, JPY, CHF, etc.) in all UN trade documents. It avoids ambiguities (e.g. 'franc' ambiguous between CHF and XPF).
Origin
Adopted by the UN/ECE Working Party WP.4 in 1978. Referenced by every EDIFACT standard (CUX segment, element 6345) and carried over to ISO 20022.
Use
The EDIFACT CUX segment carries a Rec 9 / ISO 4217 code: CUX+2:EUR:9'. EUR is the reference invoice currency, 2 is the role (Reference currency), 9 is the qualifier (Source: ISO 4217).
