UEI
Successor to DUNS for entity identification in US federal procurement.
Definition
The SAM UEI is a 12-character, non-meaningful alphanumeric identifier assigned directly by the government through SAM.gov. Since 4 April 2022 it replaces the Dun & Bradstreet DUNS Number as the entity identification key across the entire US federal award lifecycle.
Origin
Issued and managed by the General Services Administration (GSA) within the System for Award Management (SAM.gov), per the federal transition away from DUNS made effective in 2022.
Example in context
A registered supplier displays a UEI such as ZQGGHJH74DW7; this identifier replaces the former DUNS field in solicitation forms.
