SIRET
SIRET. The French 14-digit identifier that designates each establishment of a company.
Definition
The SIRET is the French 14-digit identifier issued by INSEE for every establishment of a company. It decomposes into a 9-digit SIREN (company identifier) + 5-digit NIC (Numéro Interne de Classement, specific to the establishment). The SIRET remains stable as long as the establishment exists at its address — relocation triggers a NIC change, hence a SIRET change, but SIREN remains.
Origin
SIRET was created by Decree no. 73-314 of 14 March 1973 as part of the rollout of the Système d'Identification du Répertoire des Entreprises et des Établissements (SIRENE). It is today used in most French EDI flows (invoices, Chorus Pro public procurement, social and tax declarations), and forms the basis of the French EORI for customs operators established in France.
Example in context
NAD+BY+12345678901234::SIRET++ACME SUPERMARCHES SA'
Here, SIRET 12345678901234 identifies a specific establishment of the Acme chain — for example the supermarket on Rue de Rivoli. SIREN 123456789 identifies the Acme company as a whole. On Chorus Pro, the sender identifier is typically a SIRET, never just a SIREN.
