Definition
ABA Routing Transit Number — 9-digit code that identifies a US bank. Published by the American Bankers Association (ABA) and used in all ACH payments governed by NACHA.
Origin
Created in 1910 by the ABA. NACHA (National Automated Clearing House Association) has governed ACH rules since 1974, which use the ABA RTN for routing.
Use
In X12 820 Payment Order/Remittance Advice, the payer account ABA RTN appears in the BPR (Beginning Segment for Payment Order).
