N4 (X12)

ASC X12 geographic address segment inside the N1 loop.

Definition

N4 (Geographic Location) carries the city (N401), state/subdivision code (N402), postal code (N403) and country code (N404). It follows N1 (and optionally N3) in the party identification loop. All its elements are optional, which makes it flexible but a frequent target of completeness validation.

Defined in the ASC X12 EDI Standard (segment dictionary, N4 segment), maintained by the Accredited Standards Committee X12 (ANSI ASC X12). Country codes draw on ISO 3166.
