MT-TAG-52A
MT tag 52a identifies the Ordering Institution on an MT 103/202; sub-options 52A (BIC), 52D (free text).
Definition
Tag 52a identifies the financial institution holding the originator's account, distinct from Sender (which may be a correspondent). On a classical customer-to-bank payment, 52a is implicit (= Sender) and thus omitted.
Origin
Present since the early MT versions. The Sender / Ordering Institution split lets one model indirect payments where multiple banks relay each other.
Use
On a payment initiated through a private bank routing via correspondent BNP Paribas: Sender = BNP Paribas, but :52A:PRIVATEBANKBIC tells the reader that the private bank actually debited the end customer.
