MX Message Identifier
ISO 20022 message naming convention, known as “MX”.
Definition
Every ISO 20022 message carries a four-part identifier: a 4-letter business-area code (pacs = payments clearing & settlement, camt = cash management, pain = payments initiation), a 3-digit message number, a 3-digit variant number and a 2-digit version number. This “MX” nickname contrasts with the legacy FIN “MT” messages.
Origin
Convention defined in the ISO 20022 Message Definition Report and the ISO 20022 Repository, governed by the Registration Management Group (ISO TC 68/SC 9). The informal term “MX” was popularised by SWIFT.
Example in context
pacs.008.001.08 → business area pacs, message 008 (FIToFICustomerCreditTransfer), variant 001, version 08. Reflected in the XML namespace: urn:iso:std:iso:20022:tech:xsd:pacs.008.001.08
