ISO-14067
ISO 14067 CFP product carbon footprint LCA.
Definition
ISO 14067 key requirements: (1) Functional Unit: explicit reference quantity (1 kg product, 1 km transported, 1 kWh delivered, etc.). (2) System Boundaries: cradle-to-grave (raw materials extraction -> manufacture -> distribution -> use -> end-of-life) vs cradle-to-gate (excludes use + end-of-life). (3) Data Quality: Foreground data (primary, from product manufacturer) + Background data (secondary, from LCA databases EcoInvent, GaBi, Sphera). (4) GWP characterization factors: IPCC AR5 100-year GWP standard (CO2 = 1, CH4 = 28, N2O = 265, etc.) or recent AR6. (5) Allocation rules: when single process produces multiple co-products (e.g., petroleum refining), allocate emissions by mass, energy content, economic value. (6) Documentation: detailed methodology + data sources for reproducibility. EPD (Environmental Product Declaration): standardized format publishing CFP results per ISO 14025 + ISO 14067, often industry-specific Product Category Rules (PCR). Adoption: construction industry (cement, steel manufacturers), consumer products (electronics, food + beverage), automotive (BEV vs ICE LCA studies).
Origin
ISO 14067 published 2013 (initial draft) ; final version published August 2018 ; ISO TC207/SC7 maintenance ; succeeds PAS 2050 UK 2008+2011.
Example in context
ArcelorMittal steel manufacturer publishes EPDs based on ISO 14067 + EN 15804 (construction PCR): 1 tonne hot-rolled steel coil cradle-to-gate ~1.85 tCO2e (BF-BOF Blast Furnace - Basic Oxygen Furnace conventional steel), comparison 0.40 tCO2e XCarb Recycled DRI-EAF Direct Reduced Iron - Electric Arc Furnace renewable hydrogen DRI ; competitive advantage construction green building LEED + BREEAM ratings.
