ISO 11649

ISO TC 68 standard for a structured creditor reference, used in payments and invoice reconciliation.

Definition

ISO 11649 defines a structured reference (up to 25 characters) that starts with "RF", followed by two check digits computed with MOD 97-10 (as in IBAN), then the creditor's internal reference. It lets a payment be auto-matched to the originating invoice.

Origin

Published by ISO TC 68/SC 8 as ISO 11649:2009 "Financial services — Core banking — Structured creditor reference to remittance information".

Example in context

RF18 5390 0754 7034 — where "18" are the check digits and "539007547034" the creditor reference; carried in <CdtrRefInf><Ref> in ISO 20022.

  • IBAN — same MOD 97-10 check algorithm.
  • ISO 20022 — carries the reference inside RmtInf.
