Seller pays carriage, risk at first carrier.

Definition

CPT is multimodal. Critical: the costs ≠ risk dichotomy may surprise. The seller recommends the buyer take insurance because CPT does NOT include insurance (vs CIP which includes it).

Introduced in Incoterms 1980.

Example in context

A Chinese SME sells CPT Roissy CDG to a French wholesaler — pays the China Cargo Airlines air transport but risk transfers at Shanghai loading.
