Carrier (Incoterms)
The key notion that anchors delivery in the multimodal F- and C-rules.
Definition
The Incoterms define the carrier as the party that undertakes, by a contract of carriage, to perform or procure the carriage. Under FCA, CPT and CIP the seller delivers — and risk passes — when it hands the goods to the first nominated carrier, not on arrival. Identifying that carrier precisely is therefore decisive.
Origin
Term defined in the Explanatory Notes for Users of Incoterms 2020, International Chamber of Commerce (ICC publication No. 723E).
Example in context
Under "FCA Sceaux", as soon as the seller loads the goods onto the truck of the carrier engaged by the buyer, delivery is made and risk transfers.
