Historical mode of VANs (GEIS, IBM Global Network, AT&T EasyLink). Modern Cloud EDI is the updated version. Advantages: no infrastructure to manage, 24/7 support often included. Disadvantages: vendor lock-in, recurring costs, added latency.
Origin
Model dating from the 1980s with the first VANs. Current evolution into multi-tenant Cloud EDI.
