AI (21) Serial Number
GS1 Application Identifier (21), item-level serialisation.
Definition
Combined with a GTIN, AI (21) forms a unique instance identity (SGTIN), the basis of the serialisation required notably by the Falsified Medicines Directive and the GS1 EPCIS standard. Being variable length (1 to 20 characters), it requires an FNC1 separator when it is not the last field in the string.
Origin
Defined in section 3.2 of the GS1 General Specifications (Application Identifier definitions), maintained by GS1.
