GIR
Related Identification Numbers. The EDIFACT segment that groups several identifiers handled as a single linked set — typically a vehicle's chassis, engine and gearbox.
Definition
The UN/EDIFACT D.96A directory defines GIR as "to identify a set of associated numbers that refer to a single entity". Its structure:
- 7297 — Set type code qualifier (mandatory): UNCL 7297, e.g.
1Vehicle,2Engine,3Heading,4Container,5Article. - C206 — Identification number (1 to 5): repeated up to 5 times, each composed of identifier (7402), qualifier (7405) specifying its role, and code list (3055).
Typical UNCL 7405 qualifiers: BM Bill of material, CH
Chassis number, EN Engine number, GN Vehicle
gearbox number, RM Road manifest, SN Serial
number, VN Vehicle identification number (VIN, ISO 3779).
Origin
GIR is defined in EDIFACT from the automotive subset and is heavily used
by Odette/JAIF directives. Its canonical table is trsdgir.htm.
VIN values (qualifier VN) follow ISO 3779, the international
standard for vehicle identification numbers since 1983.
Example in context
Complete vehicle identification block:
Reading: Vehicle-type set (1), VIN WAUZZZ8K9AA000123,
engine number 1M8A123456, gearbox number 5HP19F123456.
The three form a coherent set — this vehicle, with this engine, and this
gearbox.
