X12 Functional Group Trailer, the symmetric closer of the GS group envelope.
Definition
GE carries exactly two data elements: GE01 — Number of Transaction Sets Included (a count of the ST/SE pairs inside the group) and GE02 — Group Control Number, which must equal the GS06 of the matching GS header. A mismatch on either element is a group-level control error reported in a 997/999 AK9.
Origin
Defined in the ANSI ASC X12.6 (Application Control Structure) interchange envelope rules, maintained by the Accredited Standards Committee X12. GE has paired with GS since the earliest published X12 versions.
