FTP-LEGACY

FTP legacy in EDI. See official source.

Definition

Plain FTP (RFC 959, 1985) — historical protocol used for EDI file drops before SFTP, FTPS and AS2 became standard. Considered obsolete today for production flows.

Origin

RFC 959 (October 1985) standardised FTP, derived from RFC 765 (1980). Plain FTP transmits credentials in cleartext and offers no integrity or confidentiality; it was widely used in retail EDI before 2010.

Use

Plain FTP EDI flows now fail GDPR / PCI / HIPAA requirements. Operators mandate SFTP, FTPS, AS2 or OFTP2 as replacements, with a documented cutover schedule.

  • SFTP — see entry.
  • AS2 — see entry.
