DTP

Date or Time or Period. The X12 HIPAA-domain segment used to carry a qualified date in healthcare Transaction Sets.

Definition

The DTP segment is an X12 segment used mainly in HIPAA Transaction Sets (US healthcare: 270, 271, 837, 835) to carry a qualified date or period. It carries a Date Time Qualifier (DE 374), a Date Time Period Format Qualifier (DE 1250) and a Date Time Period (DE 1251).

Origin

DTP was defined as a variant of DTM to meet precision and format requirements imposed by HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, 1996) — codified in implementation guides 005010X279, 005010X220 and related TR3 documents.

Example in context

DTP*291*D8*20260514~
DTP*434*RD8*20260101-20261231~

Here, 291 qualifies the service date (D8 = YYYYMMDD), 434 qualifies the eligibility period (RD8 = date range).

  • HIPAA — the regulatory framework that generalises DTP usage.
  • TR3 — Technical Report Type 3, the HIPAA guide that specifies DTP.
  • X12 — the North-American standard.
