DSG
Dosage Administration. The EDIFACT segment that describes the dosage of a prescribed medicine.
Definition
The DSG (Dosage Administration) segment carries the administration parameters of a medicine: administration route (UNCL 4519), frequency, unit dose. It belongs to the EDIFACT-healthcare family and is still used in some European hospital pharmacy chains.
Origin
DSG was defined by UN/CEFACT under the EDIFACT-healthcare programme of the 1990s. It was designed for interoperable prescription transmission between prescribers, pharmacies and hospital management systems, aligned with ISO and ATC codes.
Example in context
DSG+ORAL:1+50:MG+1:H+8'
Here, ORAL qualifies the administration route, 1 codes the prescription, 50:MG gives the unit dose, 1:H states the interval (1 hour), 8 counts administrations.
