CIN
Clinical Information. The EDIFACT segment that carries coded clinical information.
Definition
The CIN (Clinical Information) segment carries structured clinical information: information category (UNCL 4509), clinical code (often ICD or SNOMED), observed value. It is used in EDIFACT healthcare messages such as MEDPID, MEDPRE and MEDDIS.
Origin
CIN was added to the UNTDID as part of the UN/CEFACT EDIFACT-healthcare programme of the 1990s, coordinated with WHO and HL7. It foreshadows convergence to HL7 v2/v3 and FHIR for modern clinical flows.
Example in context
CIN+DIA+I10:ICD10+HYPERTENSION'
Here, DIA qualifies the category (Diagnostic), I10 is the ICD-10 clinical code for essential hypertension, and HYPERTENSION is the textual label.
