ABA RTN
US bank identifier for domestic ACH and Fedwire payments.
Definition
The RTN is 9 digits: the first 4 are the Federal Reserve routing symbol, the next 4 the ABA institution identifier, and the 9th is a check digit. Validation applies repeating weights 3-7-1, where (3(d1+d4+d7)+7(d2+d5+d8)+(d3+d6+d9)) mod 10 = 0.
Origin
Introduced in 1910 by the American Bankers Association; number assignment is run by the official registrar (Accuity/LexisNexis Risk Solutions) under the ABA Routing Number Policy, and RTNs are used by the Federal Reserve for Fedwire and ACH.
