Austrian industrial EDI — automotive, machinery, steel

Austria is a quiet industrial powerhouse. With BMW Steyr (BMW's largest diesel engine plant worldwide), Magna Steyr (Graz, ~250,000 contract-manufactured cars per year for Mercedes / BMW / Toyota), KTM (motorcycles, European leader), AVL List (world #1 in powertrain engineering) and voestalpine (global top 5 stainless steel), it hosts a dense industrial EDI ecosystem aligned on German VDA, French Galia and European Odette standards.

The major Austrian industrial sites

SiteActivityDominant EDI standards
BMW Steyr BMW diesel and hybrid engine production (~1.2M engines/year, BMW's #1 worldwide). Gives "Made in Steyr" identity to models. VDA 4905/4915 (DELFOR JIT, DELJIT), Odette OFTP2 over ENX, AS2 for some tier-2
Magna Steyr Graz Full contract manufacturing (~250K vehicles/year): Mercedes G-Class, BMW Z4, Toyota Supra, Jaguar I-Pace (until 2024). Europe's largest contract assembly plant. VDA + Galia + Odette + JISA (Japanese), OFTP2 over ENX dominant
KTM AG (Mattighofen) European motorcycle leader (KTM, Husqvarna, GASGAS). ~380,000 motorcycles/year. EDIFACT VDA subsets, OFTP2 + AS2

Pierer Mobility (KTM holding) Holding KTM + Husqvarna + GASGAS + Pankl Racing. Same as KTM, harmonisation ongoing

Standards used — VDA, Galia, Odette

  • VDA Recommendations (Verband der Automobilindustrie): dominant German standards in Austria, BMW Steyr and Magna Steyr strongly tied to the Munich OEM and the Stuttgart star manufacturer. VDA 4905 (DELFOR delivery schedules) and VDA 4915 (DELJIT JIT / JIS) are the base.
  • Galia (Groupement d'intérêt automobile): French standards adopted by sites working for Renault, Stellantis, Forvia. EDIFACT D.96A subset specifications.
  • Odette International: European cross-OEM standards, especially used by cross-border equipment makers. Odette WebEDI, Odette OFTP, Odette Logistics Identification (OLI).
  • RosettaNet PIP: for high-tech (Plansee, AT&S, ams OSRAM, Infineon Villach). Main profiles PIP 3A4 (ORDER), 3B12 (DESADV), 3C3 (INVOIC), 4B2 (CHANGE), 7B5 (DEMAND).
  • cXML: marginal use on international catalogues (Plansee → Intel for example), complementary to PIPs.
  • No Austrian XRechnung. The German XRechnung format does not apply in Austria — local equivalent = ebInterface 6.1.

OFTP2 and the ENX network

The dominant transport is OFTP2 (Odette File Transfer Protocol 2, RFC 5024) over the private ENX (European Network Exchange) network:

  • ENX Association: private consortium created in 2000 by major European OEMs (VW Group, BMW, Daimler, Porsche, Renault, PSA, Volvo, Fiat). Dedicated MPLS network, < 30 ms latency between European sites.
  • BMW Steyr and Magna Steyr: ENX-connected since the early 2000s. All DELFOR / DELJIT / DESADV / INVOIC flows with tier 1-2 transit via ENX OFTP2.
  • Authentication: X.509 certificates issued by national Trust Centers (in Austria, mainly A-Trust / Globaltrust).
  • AS2 coexistence: for non-ENX suppliers (SMEs, newly onboarded suppliers), Internet AS2 is accepted with reinforced encryption and signature.
  • RNIF 2.0 → AS4 migration: for RosettaNet flows, the AS2 to AS4 ebMS 3.0 transition is underway at Plansee and AT&S.

DESADV / JIT and line synchronisation

JIT DESADV (Just-In-Time / Just-In-Sequence) is central at BMW Steyr and Magna Steyr. Example — delivery of N57 cylinder heads for diesel engines:

  • BGM 351 — Despatch Advice. JIT number JIT-2026-05-19-00219.
  • DTM 137 / DTM 11 — Precise departure time at supplier (06:35) and expected assembly line arrival (11:20). 4h45 window.
  • TDT + EQD — Transport mode (truck) and container identifier TEST-CONT-2026-019.
  • LIN + GIR — Part identified by both GTIN (4001234567890) and BMW internal reference N57D30A0 (GIR Government Information Reference segment, used in VDA to carry the OEM part reference).

RosettaNet PIP for high-tech

For high-tech flows (Plansee → Intel, AT&S → Apple, ams OSRAM → Bosch), the RosettaNet PIP (Partner Interface Process) standard dominates. Main profiles used:

  • PIP 3A4 — Request Purchase Order. ORDERS equivalent, with bidirectional acknowledgment.
  • PIP 3B12 — Distribute Shipment Notification. DESADV equivalent, with container tracking and ETA.
  • PIP 3C3 — Notify of Invoice. INVOIC equivalent, with reverse charge mention if intra-EU.
  • PIP 4B2 — Notify of Shipment Receipt. RECADV equivalent.
  • PIP 7B5 — Notify of Demand. For forecasting.
  • RNIF 2.0 then AS4 ebMS 3.0 transport. RosettaNet Implementation Framework historically, AS4 migration ongoing for GDPR + dematerialisation compliance.

Articulation with banking and supply finance

  • STUZZA — Austrian banking reference. STUZZA (see dedicated page) standardises interbank payments and SEPA / CAMT.052/053/054 file reception.
  • INVOIC → REMADV → CAMT.054. The classic triple: EDIFACT invoice, EDIFACT remittance advice, then ISO 20022 bank booking notification are chained to automate reconciliation at the industrial.
  • Supply chain finance (reverse factoring). Several Austrian industrials (voestalpine, Andritz, KTM) use reverse factoring programs that rely on the EDIFACT INVOIC flow as financing trigger.
  • UID-Nummer in REMADV. The RFF UID segment must carry the recipient's ATU UID-Nummer for EU fiscal traceability (ZM compatible).

Common pitfalls

  • Confusing VDA and Galia. BMW Steyr requires VDA 4905/4915. Magna Steyr accepts both depending on the assembled brand. A supplier working for Mercedes G follows VDA, but for Renault it switches to Galia.
  • Not linking ENX and Internet access. ENX OFTP2 flows are not reachable from the Internet — an ENX connection or a relay OFTP2/AS2 AP is required.
  • Mismanaging JIT. A JIT DESADV sent more than 15 minutes late can trigger a line stop (Bandstopp) at BMW Steyr — contractual penalty ~€50,000 / event.
  • Forgetting intra-EU reverse charge mention. INVOICs to German OEMs from Austria must mention § 19 UStG (reverse charge) — otherwise German VAT recovery is denied.
  • Underestimating PIP → AS4 migration. Plansee and AT&S complete their AS4 ebMS 3.0 transition in 2026-2027 — to be anticipated on the supplier ERP side.
