Swedish industrial EDI — Volvo, Scania, SKF, Ericsson

Swedish industry is the country's economic backbone — automotive (Volvo, Scania), engineering (SKF, Sandvik, Atlas Copco), telecom (Ericsson), energy (ABB Sweden). All operate heavily on EDIFACT VDA/Odette + OFTP2 for 25-30 years, with very dense pan-European supply chains.

Volvo Cars (Geely)

Volvo Cars (officially Volvo Car AB since 2010) has been owned by Geely Holding since 2010 (acquired from Ford for USD 1.8B). Production and EDI strategy:

  • Main sites:
    • Torslandaverken (Gothenburg) — historical plant, XC60, XC90, V60, V90 (~280K vehicles/year)
    • Ghent (Belgium) — XC40, EX30 BEV, XC40 BEV (~280K vehicles/year)
    • Charleston (USA South Carolina) — EX90, S60
    • Chengdu and Daqing (China) — XC60, XC90 for Chinese market
  • EDI architecture: centralised Volvo Cars Corporation hub in Gothenburg, ~6,500 connected suppliers. Standards VDA 4905 (DELFOR — call-offs), VDA 4906 (DESADV), VDA 4913 (RECADV), VDA 4938 (Invoice).
  • Transport: OFTP2 on ENX network (Europe + Asia), X.509 certificates issued by TC Trust Center. AS2 backup for suppliers outside ENX.
  • EV model: EX30 (Ghent production) — integrated Geely supply chain, many flows with Chinese Geely plants via OFTP2 + SAP IDOC variant for LFP batteries.
  • PEPPOL: connected via Pagero since 2021, mainly used for Swedish B2G and some European flows post-2024.

Volvo Trucks and Scania

  • AB Volvo (Volvo Trucks): distinct entity from Volvo Cars since 1999 (Volvo Cars sold to Ford then). Production:
    • Tuve (Gothenburg) — FH, FM trucks (~75K vehicles/year)
    • Köping — gearboxes
    • Skövde — Diesel and electric engines
    • Umeå — cabs
    EDI: ~35M messages/year, VDA + Galia (French) for flows with Renault Trucks (subsidiary).
  • Scania: 100% owned by Volkswagen Group since 2008 (integrated in TRATON SE with MAN). Production:
    • Södertälje (HQ, ~50K trucks/year, engines)
    • Oskarshamn (cabs)
    • Luleå (chassis)
    • Zwolle (Netherlands, final assembly for Northern Europe)
    EDI: VW Group alignment (TRATON GBS Shared Services in Poland), EDIFACT D01B mandatory for suppliers > EUR 5M turnover.

Mechanical — SKF, Atlas Copco, Sandvik

  • SKF Group: world leader in ball bearings (founded 1907 in Gothenburg). Turnover ~SEK 92B (~USD 9B), 80+ manufacturing sites in 40 countries. EDI:
    • Central hub in Gothenburg + regional hubs (Lansdale USA, Singapore, Pune)
    • EDIFACT D96A standards + Odette + OAGi BOD for internal M&A flows
    • Mostly OFTP2 transport + AS2 for US customers
  • Atlas Copco: industrial compressors, pneumatic tools (founded 1873, HQ Nacka near Stockholm). Turnover ~SEK 140B. EDI:
    • ~25M messages/year with 12,000 global suppliers
    • EDIFACT D96A internal Atlas Copco subsets
    • Gradual migration to OAGi / RosettaNet PIPs for ASIC/component flows
  • Sandvik: mining tools, quarry equipment (founded 1862, HQ Sandviken). Turnover ~SEK 125B. Subdivisions: Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions, Sandvik Manufacturing Solutions, Sandvik Materials Technology. Traditional EDIFACT EDI + partial ServiceNow transition for digital.

Telecom — Ericsson

  • Scope: telecom infrastructure equipment (BBU/RRU 5G, mMIMO, optical transport). Turnover SEK 265B (2024), ~95,000 global employees.
  • Sweden sites: Stockholm-Kista (HQ + R&D), Borås (production), Linköping (radio R&D). Massive production outsourced to Flex/Foxconn (Asia) and Jabil (Europe).
  • EDI: very digitalised infrastructure, mixed EDIFACT (with traditional suppliers) + OAGi BOD (with modern partners) + cXML (with PunchOut catalogues) usage.
  • Volume: ~120M messages/year in total (orders, capacity planning, 5G component shipments).
  • Specificity: Ericsson is one of Europe's major OAGi BOD users (Process Manufacturing) and has historically contributed to RosettaNet PIPs 3A4 (PO), 3A6 (PO acknowledgement), 4B2 (Shipment Notification).

Energy — ABB Sweden

  • ABB Sweden: Swedish subsidiary of ABB Group (Switzerland/Sweden, 1988 merger of ASEA + BBC). Operational HQ in Västerås. ~9,000 employees in Sweden.
  • Scope: electrical equipment (transformers, HVDC circuit breakers, industrial robots — ABB Robotics).
  • EDI: global ABB Group infrastructure based in Zurich + regional hubs. EDIFACT D96A standards + ABB-specific subsets, OFTP2 transport mandatory for European suppliers.
  • Volumes: ABB Sweden processes ~45M EDI messages/year, mainly for Power Grids flows (large-format transformers).

Standards OFTP2, VDA, Odette

Swedish industry mostly uses Odette/VDA standards for B2B communication:

  • OFTP2 (Odette File Transfer Protocol v2): secure transport protocol (TLS 1.2+), used for exchanging VDA/Odette/EDIFACT messages. European automotive de facto standard.
  • ENX network (European Network Exchange): private Tier-1 automotive backbone, ~1,700 companies connected in Europe, interoperability agreement with ANX (USA), JNX (Japan).
  • VDA: German standards used heavily by Volvo Cars (Ford legacy 1999-2010). VDA 4905 (DELFOR), 4906 (DESADV), 4913 (RECADV), 4938 (INVOIC).
  • Odette: European automotive standards — Odette Sweden is the national association (based in Gothenburg). Odette Global Materials Management (GMM), Odette Logistics Toolbox standards.
  • Galia: French standards (PSA, Renault) used by Volvo Trucks for flows with Renault Trucks (AB Volvo subsidiary).
  • OAGi BOD: Business Object Documents used by Ericsson and SKF for modern API-friendly flows (XML, JSON).
