EDIFACT in Italian automotive
Italian automotive — Stellantis, CNH Industrial, Iveco, Marelli, Brembo, Pirelli — practices EDIFACT at scale since the 1990s. Odette European and Galia French standards primarily, on OFTP2 transport over the ENX network. As in France, it is industry that anticipated e-invoicing by decades, long before the SdI.

Typical automotive messages
The automotive production cycle relies on 7-8 EDIFACT messages between OEMs and Tier 1, in a real-time flow accurate to the minute for JIT production lines.
- DELFOR (D.97A) — delivery forecasts on rolling 12-26 weeks horizon, weekly updates.
- DELJIT (D.97A or D.04A) — just-in-time (JIT) call-offs, typically generated 6-12 times/day. Sequence reference + truck no. + time slot to the minute.
- DESADV (D.96A) — dispatch advice on every truck departure. Detail of pallets, SSCC, supplier batch.
- IFTMIN (D.96A) — transport instruction to the carrier with the loading order.
- AVIEXP (D.97A) — complementary advance shipping notice with estimated time of arrival (ETA).
- INVRPT (D.96A) — supplier inventory report on the OEM plant side, used in Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI).
- INVOIC (legacy) — EDIFACT invoice, migrated to FatturaPA via SdI since 2019.
- REMADV (D.97A) — payment advice by the OEM to the supplier, tied to contractual commercial terms (60 days, 90 days, etc.).

- Odette International (Brussels) — European automotive standardisation body since 1984. Publishes the Odette EDI standard (V3.0 and V4.0), the Recommendation V profiles on OEM practices, and the CIN (Customer Interface Network) mapping atlas.
- GALIA (France) — Odette extensions for France and Italy. Stellantis (PSA + FCA heritage) mostly follows Galia guidelines on the Italian as well as French side, harmonised in 2019 with ENX.
- VDA (Germany) — Verband der Automobilindustrie. Cross-referenced by Marelli (Kansei branch) and Brembo for supplies to Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche.
- JAMA / JASPAR (Japan) — Marelli, Brembo and Pirelli interoperate with Toyota, Honda, Nissan via JAMA EDI. JAMA files converge to Odette on the EDIFACT D.97A stack.
- SASIG (Strategic Automotive Standards Industry Group) — cross initiative Odette + AIAG (USA) + JAMA + KAMA (Korea) for global standards harmonisation. Stellantis and CNH are active members.
OFTP2 over ENX
Transport is almost exclusively OFTP2 (RFC 5024) over the ENX network (European Network Exchange). No AS2, no PEPPOL, no REST API.
- ENX Association — private secure MPLS network connecting ~700 automotive participants in Europe (OEMs, Tier 1, Tier 2, carriers).
- ENX latency — < 30 ms intra-Europe, < 100 ms to non-EU subsidiaries (CN, US, JP).
- Contractual SLA — 99.5% availability, scheduled maintenance window on Sunday 2-6 AM.
- OFTP2 features — AES-256 encryption, CMS signature, ZLIB compression, restart point for large files (up to 500 MB per exchange).
- Cost — annual ENX subscription: €1,500-15,000 depending on volume (Tier 1); OFTP2 software: €5,000-50,000 license + maintenance.
Coexistence with the SdI
As in retail, the SdI only captures the fiscal dimension (INVOIC migrated to FatturaPA). The rest — DELFOR, DELJIT, DESADV, IFTMIN — stays in EDIFACT over OFTP2/ENX. The two cohabit at the identifier layer:
- OFTP2 SSID/SFID — EDI addressing specific to ENX (partita IVA + automotive suffix).
- SdI Codice Destinatario — separate fiscal addressing via the 7-char Codice Destinatario, independent from the OFTP2 SSID.
- Reconciliation — each OEM maintains an internal lookup table between EDI SSID and CD/CessionarioCommittente SdI to guarantee unique accounting imputation.
