Croatian industrial EDI — pharma, energy, mechanical, naval
Croatian industry uses a mosaic of sector EDIs inherited from its post-1991 international opening: Pliva (pharma, TEVA Israel subsidiary since 2008), Podravka (Vegeta + preserves), Adris Group (ex-TDR tobacco, Maistra hospitality), INA d.d. (refinery, MOL Hungary majority), Đuro Đaković Slavonski Brod (mechanical engineering, defence), and the Brodograđevna industrija Split (shipyards). Clear verticals: EDIFACT pharma + GS1 healthcare for Pliva, OFTP2 / ENX for Đuro Đaković's auto-aero corridors, EDIFACT D:96A and D:01B for Podravka and INA.
History — from Yugoslav self-management to M&A integration
Many Croatian industrials are direct heirs of Yugoslav champions born under the workers' self-management (samoupravljanje) regime: Đuro Đaković in Slavonski Brod (locomotives, armoured vehicles, machinery since 1921), Brodogradilište Split (shipyard founded in 1922), Pliva (pharma, first macrolide antibiotic azithromycin patented in Zagreb in 1981).
After 1991 independence and the 1991-1995 war, a wave of privatisations and M&A redrew the map: Pliva moved under TEVA (Israel) in 2008, INA under MOL (Hungary) in 2009, Mercator (SI, ex-Agrokor) under Fortenova in 2019. Each deal imposed on the target an EDI alignment with the buyer's global profile — which makes Croatian industrial EDI heterogeneous but sophisticated.
1991-2000 | Croatian independence. Mass privatisations. Pliva stays
| public before opening its capital. Podravka emerges as a
| regional agri-food champion (Vegeta exported to 60+ countries).
|
2003 | INA d.d. (Industrija nafte) — partial privatisation, MOL
| Hungary enters the capital. Becomes majority shareholder in 2009.
|
2006-2008 | Pliva — merger with Barr Pharmaceuticals (US), then 2008
| acquisition by TEVA Pharmaceutical Industries (Israel).
| EDI migration to the TEVA global profile (EDIFACT pharma +
| GS1 healthcare).
|
2010-2015 | Podravka — EDIFACT EANCOM rollout with EU retail chains
| (Kaufland DE, Spar AT/IT, Tesco PL). Investment in GS1
| traceability from 2013.
|
2013-07-01 | EU accession — gradual convergence to EU sector standards:
| EHIBCC / GS1 pharma, ENX OFTP2 auto.
|
2018-2019 | Fina e-Račun B2G mandate — suppliers to state companies (INA
| partially, HEP energy, Hrvatske ceste) shift their
| administration flows to e-Račun.
|
2020-2023 | Đuro Đaković — EDI modernisation following defence contracts
| (mechanical deliveries to Patria Land Systems, BAE Systems).
|
2024-2026 | ViDA preparation — pharma and energy verticals on the front
| line for the future B2B CTC. INA + Pliva align their EU
| corridors on Peppol. Governance — sector verticals
There is no single authority for Croatian industrial EDI. Governance is vertical, by sector:
- Pharma — GS1 Croatia + EHIBCC for traceability, alignment with Directive 2011/62/EU (falsified medicines) and the 2024 EU DMP regulation.
- Auto / defence — ENX Association (European OEM consortium), Odette / VDA profiles. Đuro Đaković uses OFTP2 over ENX for deliveries to Patria Land Systems (FI) and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (DE).
- Energy / petrochemicals — sector formats ENERTRADE (gas), EFET for power, MOL Group profiles for INA.
- Tobacco (Adris/TDR) — EDIFACT TIR customs + GS1 retail, Track & Trace traceability (Directive 2014/40/EU).
- Naval — INTERCARGO standards + EDIFACT IFTMIN/IFTMBC for maritime transport.
Technical schema — OFTP2 / EDIFACT / GS1
Croatian industrials use UN/EDIFACT standards D:96A, D:01B or D:13B depending on vertical and principal. Transport via OFTP2 for auto/aero corridors, AS2 for pharma, FTP/SFTP for smaller flows.

Adoption — EU corridors + M&A coverage
- Pliva (TEVA) — EDI coverage ~95% with EU hospitals and pharma wholesalers. Track & Trace traceability since 2019 (FMD directive).
- Podravka — ~80% of its EU chains on EDIFACT, the rest on PDF + emerging Peppol (UK/IE).
- INA d.d. — 100% MOL corridor on EDIFACT, ~70% of domestic suppliers on EDI (mix Fina e-Račun + paper).
- Đuro Đaković — 100% of major defence programmes on OFTP2 / ENX. The rest via email + PDF.
- Adris Group / TDR — 100% cigarette in EDIFACT Track & Trace (Directive 2014/40/EU imposed).
- HEP d.d. — 100% B2G in Fina e-Račun, high-volume suppliers on EDIFACT MSCONS for meters.
Common pitfalls
- Confusing INA and MOL. INA d.d. is the HR legal entity (HR OIB and IBAN). MOL Nyrt. is the HU parent. An EDI invoice must target the right entity — billing MOL instead of INA for a Rijeka delivery is a frequent foreign-supplier error.
- Pre-TEVA vs post-TEVA Pliva profile. Since 2008, Pliva uses the global TEVA profile (Edicom). Old ERPs still reference the 2005-2007 Pliva profile (Combis VAN) — flows silently ignored.
- Expired or mis-renewed OFTP2. ENX OFTP2 certificates expire annually. Đuro Đaković had 2022 incidents on Patria programmes — always renew 60 days early.
- Tobacco Track & Trace. Directive 2014/40/EU imposes a unique identifier per cigarette pack. Adris/TDR must transmit via the national ID-Issuer (in HR: AKD d.o.o.). ID-Issuer failure = factory-output block.
- EDIFACT vs B2G e-Račun. For supplier flows to HEP, HŽ, or Hrvatske ceste, you ALWAYS need Fina e-Račun (B2G mandate). Industrial EDIFACT stays for private supplier-supplier flows, not B2G.
