Couche réseau microservices sidecar-driven.

Définition

Service mesh est composé d'un data plane (proxy sidecar par pod : Envoy, Linkerd-proxy, Cilium) et d'un control plane (config, certs, telemetry : Istiod, Linkerd Destination, Consul Service Mesh). mTLS automatique, traffic shifting (canary), distributed tracing, RBAC fine-grained.

Terme popularisé par William Morgan (Buoyant) en 2017 ; Istio annoncé mai 2017 ; Linkerd 2.0 en septembre 2018.

Exemple en contexte

Une fintech déploie Istio sur Kubernetes pour mTLS automatique entre 200 microservices et traffic shifting canary 1%.
